How to Build Momentum After the First Few Weeks of Term (Without Losing Your Sanity)

The first few weeks of term are a bit like the opening scenes of that new series on Netflix: new characters, fresh storylines, and a whole lot of energy. But once the novelty wears off and the coffee supplies dwindle, how do you keep the momentum going?
Here are some tried-and-tested ways to keep parents engaged, the community connected, and your school’s visibility high without resorting to interpretive dance in the staffroom (unless that’s your thing).

1. Keep the Conversation Going
Social media and newsletters are your best friends - the ones that don’t mind if you’re typing with one hand while holding a glue stick in the other. Share regular updates, even if they’re short. A photo of Year 3’s volcano experiment or a quote from a student about their favourite book can go a long way.
Pro tip: If you’re stuck for content, just ask a teacher what happened in their classroom today. You’ll get a story, a laugh, and possibly a glitter-related incident.
2. Celebrate Small Wins
Not every achievement needs a marching band. Did the Year 6 football team show great sportsmanship? Did Reception manage a whole day without losing a single shoe? These are victories worth sharing. They show your school’s heart — and they make great social media posts.
3. Invite Interaction
Ask questions like “What’s your child most excited about this term?” or “Guess what our mystery lunch item was today?” (Spoiler: it’s always the custard). Polls, quizzes, and comment prompts help parents feel involved and give your engagement a boost.
4. Spotlight Staff and Students
Introduce a “Meet the Team” series — because let’s face it, parents still think Mr. Thompson is the PE teacher when he’s actually Head of Science. These spotlights build familiarity and trust, and they’re a great way to show off the personalities that make your school special.
